The sport of tennis grew up in Charleston alongside its counterpart, golf. As beachside resorts began cropping up along the Lowcountry coastline, the construction of world class golf courses often went hand in hand with first rate tennis facilities.
As Charleston's golf courses began racking up national recognition, so did its tennis courts. In fact, Wild Dunes Resort earned a spot on the "Top 10 Tennis Resorts," named by Tennis Magazine. It was just the beginning. Soon the national spotlight would also fall on the tennis programs at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, earning it a number of the sport's highest accolades, including being ranked #1 in the 2004 2005 list of "Greatest U.S. Tennis Resorts" by Tennis Magazine!
As national tennis tournaments began gracing the Charleston area for the quality of its courts, along with its temperate climate conditions, the stage was set for bigger and better things.
In the spring of 2001, tennis in Charleston took on a whole new life with the opening of the Family Circle Tennis Center. The Center is a state of the art facility that serves as the centerpiece to an amazing 32 acre tennis complex on Daniel Island. It has already achieved national acclaim by receiving the 2001 Public Facility of the Year by the USTA in their annual Outstanding Facilities Awards. This facility is first class in every sense of the word. With 17 championship courts highlighted by the 10,200 seat Family Circle Magazine Stadium, the Family Circle Tennis Center is already one of the finest tennis facilities in the Southeast. With one of the most qualified teaching staffs in the country, the Center provides residents of Charleston with a diverse tennis program aimed at pleasing every age and skill level.
The Family Circle Tennis Center is the new home of the Family Circle Cup, America's premier women's tennis event. When the Family Circle Cup made its debut on the women's tour in 1973, the tournament made headlines in the world of sports by offering the first $100,000 in prize money and by being the first to be televised on a national network. For over three decades, this event has attracted worldwide attention and the tournament's parade of champions includes some of the greatest players in the history of women's tennis. Every spring, tennis enthusiasts get an opportunity to see the greats like Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati play for the cup. The Center has also served as the site for a number of other professional tennis tournaments, including the Davis Cup semifinals last summer.
