Conveniently located in the heart of Charlestons historic railroad district, the Charleston Visitor Reception and Transportation Center is a beautifully restored 1857 railroad warehouse. Offering a variety of interesting exhibits, as well as Forever Charleston, a slide show about the citys history, the Center is the perfect place to begin any exploration of Charleston. Maps, brochures and books are available for the adventurous. Ample parking is available, allowing visitors to connect with a tour or the Downtown Area Shuttle. Tickets for events and attractions are also on sale. The Center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Downtown Area Shuttle (DASH) offers transportation throughout historic district. Visitors can park at Visitor Center, 375 Meeting St., or at any city-owned parking garage while they ride. Single rides $1.00 (exact change required), multiple day passes also available. Other city bus routes available at the CARTA Web site.

For visitors wanting to take a deeper look into Charleston culture and architecture, the Frances R. Edmunds Center for Historic Preservation is the place to go. The Centers friendly staff can answer questions and direct visitors to places of interest. Books and reference materials relating to preservation and restoration are available, as well as tickets to Historic Charleston Foundations Nathaniel Russell House and Middleton Place Foundations Edmondston-Alston House. The Center is open Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

One of the nations premiere preservation organizations, The Preservation Society of Charleston offers information at its bookstore and visitor center in downtown Charleston. Of special interest is the societys Annual Fall Candlelight Tours of Homes and Gardens, which run annually from the end of September through October. Information and tickets to the event are available here. The Preservation Society of Charlestons bookstore is open Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
